As Jacob begins to fade from the spotlight, his twelve sons come to the forefront. Consequently, ownership of this real estate reverted back to Hamor's family. Jacob worked a total of 20 years for Laban (Gen 31:38). It was expressly so named by Jacob, when he had the vision of the heavenly ladder, on his way from his father at Beersheba to Harsh (Genesis 28:19; Genesis 31:13). Jacob put away those foreign gods which he had so long tolerated and which were so offensive to God. And Isaac breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, an old man of ripe age; and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him (Genesis 35:27-29). When Jacob fled from his brother Esau he laid down to sleep for the night at Bethel, where he met the Lord and received the vision of the heavenly ladder (Gen. 28:11-22). What Jacob did at Bethel was hardly novel, and what God said to him at His second appearance was nothing new. A city of Judah, Jos 15:54 situated among the mountains, Jos 20:7 20 Roman miles south of Jerusalem, and the same distance north of Beersheba. Here was the ark of the covenant. Beersheba. Choice. Shechem (/ k m / SHEK-m), also spelled Sichem (/ s k m / SIK-m; Hebrew: , romanized: em, lit. (4.) Many Christians are unwilling or hesitant to fully commit themselves to God for fear of what that commitment will cost them. At the end of 20 years, Jacob had to deceive Laban (Gen 31:20) and flee for his life and left to return to Beersheba but actually settled in Shechem (Gen 33:18). And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, And I will give the land to your descendants after you. Then God went up from him in the place where He had spoken with him. When Jacob came hither on his way to Paddan-aram we are told that he lighted upon "the place" (Gen 28:11. One of the largest oaks in Israel is found in the valley of Eshcol, about 3 miles north of the town. God had purposed that Jacob would someday return to Bethel and to his father. And it came about while Israel was dwelling in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his fathers concubine; and Israel heard of it. The birthright secured to him who possessed it (1) superior rank in his family (Gen. 49:3); (2) a double portion of the paternal inheritance (Deut. But all of a sudden, when God called him to return to Bethel, he was greatly concerned about purity. Joseph's tomb can still be seen today in Shechem (modern-day Nablus). Several lessons may be learned from the events of this chapter. ( Acts 7:15-16) This is typical of New Testament narratives in conflating several separate events into one. Jacob has many faults, but he is committed to serving the Lord. The home of the prophetess Deborah was not far off (Jdg 4:5). It was after Joseph's birth that his father, Jacob, worked his final six years for Laban in Padan Aram (30:25; 31:38,41). The tumultuous Dinah affair also occurred during Jacob's stay at Shechem. Man cannot first choose God, for he is born at enmity with God. It states that even after Simeon and Levi slew the city of Shechem, Dinah refused to leave captivity. There seems to be little question but what Bilhah was a woman who was far from young. The other five further off. It was about 12 miles N. of Jerusalem. Jacob secretly left Haran because his father-in-law was envious of Jacob's wealth and was planning to take revenge. Shechem is an ancient walled city that guarded the pass between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim, on the main road from Jerusalem to the north. Jacob had other daughters, whose names are not mentioned. But because Shechem is a place of conflict and covenant, it's also where choices are made. Bethel still abounds in stones such as Jacob used for his pillow and afterward for a sanctuary. He bought the birthright from his brother Esau, and afterward acquired the blessing intended for Esau, by practicing a well-known deceit on Isaac. of Bethel. 18. The surrounding country is bleak and barren, the hills being marked by a succession of stony terraces, which may have suggested the form of the ladder in Jacob's famous dream. Jacob set up a pillar there and poured oil and wine upon it (verse 14). But while the guilt and condemnation are dealt with, the consequences of sin remain.
